Early life

Bernhard Ensink grew up in Laar, Germany, where his parents ran a farm. After graduating at the Gymnasium Nordhorn, he studied theology in Bethel, Bielefeld, Münster and Kampen and took courses for a diploma to teach German language. From 1980 to 1987 he taught German language and religions at secondary schools in the Netherlands. In 1987 he returned to the Theologische Universiteit Kampen for giving lectures on the History of Theology and doing research. He obtained his master degree in 1985 and his doctorate in 1995. The focus of his master thesis was on ‘time and theology’ and in his PhD-thesis on the relationship between ‘Ethics and Theology’, analyzing the works of Joseph Butler.

Bernhard Ensink lives in Coevorden with his family, where he is a member of the city council, chair of the 2nd chamber and 2nd deputy of the chair of the council.[2] Additionally, he is a member of the ‘Governance committee’ of the Vereniging Nederlandse Gemeenten (Federation of Dutch local authorities).

European Cyclists' Federation

The European Cyclists' Federation (ECF) is an umbrella federation for national cycling organizations throughout Europe. ECF was founded in 1983 by twelve bicycle user associations. It now contains about 65 member organizations representing over half a million individual European citizens from almost 40 countries. Since May 2006 Bernhard Ensink has been Secretary General of The European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF). Ensink is also Velo-city Series Director.

Velo-city Series

Velo-city is ECF's series of cycle planning conferences, which started in Bremen in 1980. The Velo-city 1980 also inspired the foundation of The European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) in 1983. The conferences are one of the worlds’ primary forums for the exchange of bicycling expertise.

Velo-city is well known for gathering all those who are involved in the policy, promotion and provision for cyclists.
